Overcome Fear to Start a Business: Lessons from Mississippi to France

Fear has been my greatest teacher.

It’s guided me, challenged me, and ultimately shaped who I am today.

When I left Mississippi to study abroad in France, I had no idea what lay ahead.

I didn’t speak French fluently, and I certainly didn’t know anyone in Grenoble.

But I took the leap. That decision set me on a path filled with unexpected twists—and plenty of fear.

I still remember launching my first business. At the time, I was teaching English in corporate settings, working for a training company. A steady job that felt secure.

But things started going downhill when the companies stopped paying their freelance teachers, like me. And this happened twice!

So I started thinking about what else I could do…

I had already started creating YouTube videos—simple language tips for learners—despite being camera-shy and self-conscious.

Those early videos were far from perfect, but they marked the beginning of something bigger.

In 2015, I took the ultimate leap: I felt the fear and did it anyway! I left my job to become a full-time entrepreneur. It wasn’t easy.

There were moments of doubt, fear, and outright failure. I worked crazy hours, 7 days a week.

I learned that’s exactly what NOT to do, and now take a lot of care to manage my energy as I build up my new company.

Each mistake taught me a lesson, and each lesson moved me forward.

I learned to embrace the U.S. mindset about failure—it’s not a personal flaw. It’s not the end of everything. Heck, it’s not even a big deal, because it’s a stepping stone to success.

Today, I’m building a business that helps European entrepreneurs scale their impact by navigating the American market.

It’s a fusion of my love for connecting cultures and my passion for business growth. Along the way, I’ve discovered that fear isn’t a barrier; it’s an invitation to grow.

If you’re standing on the edge of something new, scared to take the leap, let me tell you this: Feel the fear, but do it anyway.

Your journey—and the lessons it brings—might just surprise you.
