Do you sound too formal in business situations?
Hint: If you think you don’t use enough expressions with “get”, then you’re probably being a bit too formal sometimes.
But we’ll fix that in today’s lesson!
And you’ll get a lot of useful business expressions with “get!”
One thing I hope you learn from working with me is that advanced English sounds…simple.
So, you’ll hear advanced English speakers using “get” in different situations–as a way of keeping the language simple.
Before you get started…
Let me give you a tip from my experience working with lots of Business English clients.
My team and I know that a lot of people get stressed out and confused about…”get.”
Why?
There are a LOT of expressions!

Did you know that I’ve made a worksheet to go with this lesson so that you can practice everything you see here today? I want you to make this part of the English you actually use in real life!
GET THE WORKSHEET: Make sure you practice these expressions so you can use them in real life with this worksheet made for you by a Neurolanguage coach.
Index:
1. Use “get” or “got” instead of “become.”
2. Use “get” or “got” instead of “purchase.”
3. Use “get” or “got” instead of “obtain.”
4. Use “get” or “got” instead of “bring,” “send,” or “fetch.”
5. Use “get” or “got” instead of “arrive.”
6. Use “get” or “got” in these Business English expressions.
1. Use “get” or “got” instead of “become.”
We use “get” to talk about becoming…or to talk about changing states (like emotions).
Remember, using “become” is not an error, it just doesn’t sound as natural or advanced as “get.”
Instead of saying:
“We became excited when we heard the news.”
Try saying this:
“We got excited when we heard the news.”
Here you changed the way you felt, from just normal to excited. Remember: to talk about a change of circumstances or emotions, you can use get.
2. Use “get” or “got” instead of “purchase.”
When you buy something, you can also just use get!
Instead of saying:
“I love my new computer, I just purchased it yesterday. ”
Try saying this:
“I love my new computer, I just got it yesterday.”

3. Use “get” or “got” instead of “obtain.”
You can also use “get” or “got” to sound more natural and less formal when you are talking about something you obtain or receive.
Instead of saying:
“Congratulations! You obtained the job.”
Try saying this:
“Congratulations! You got the job.”
Instead of saying:
“I received your email–thank you”
Try saying:
“I got your email–thanks for that!”
4. Use “get” or “got” instead of “bring,” “send,” or “fetch.”
You can also use “get” to talk about something one person brings or sends to another person.
Instead of saying:
“Can you bring me that report?”
Try saying:
“Can you get me that report?”

Valerie:
Hey there! I’m glad I finally got a hold of you (made contact with you).
I was trying to get through (reach you on the phone), but your line’s been busy every time I called!
Thuy:
Yeah, sorry, I’ve been busy! But I got (received) your email from the other day, and I’ve been meaning to get back to you (to call you back).
I was wondering if we could get together (meet) to talk about our new product before the presentation.
Valerie:
Hmm I’ve got a ton of work with that new client, so I can’t get away (or leave the office) until next Monday. I don’t get (don’t understand) how my schedule got so busy this week!!
