Do you need…a vacation? If you’re a business owner or entrepreneur, maybe you need one more than you think.  Today we’ll talk about why you need time off, learn some great expressions, and take a virtual vacation to my home country, the US.

As a business owner and entrepreneur, I know how important it is to take time away from work, go on vacations…and travel.  It’s essential for staying motivated and for having new ideas.

But as a language learner, there is also something incredible about practicing a language, working on it a little every day…

And then going on a trip to a country where they speak the language you’ve been learning.
That’s what I did recently on my trip to Berlin.

What about you?
Can you imagine working on your English a little bit every day?
And can you imagine celebrating your progress with a trip to the US?

Where would you go?

Let’s dive into today’s lesson on travel in the US.
We’ll start out with why you should consider taking a vacation–as a business owner.

You’ll learn some great new expressions.
And you’ll play a game where you guess what travel destination in the US I’m describing…

Ready?

Take the quiz at the end of this lesson!

Did you know that I’ve created a quick and easy quiz to go with this lesson so that you can practice everything you see here today? I want you to make this part of the English you actually use in real life! To try out today’s quiz, just scroll down to the last section and you’ll find the instructions there…and the answers too!

What you’ll learn in this article:

1. Business English Expressions: Why you need a vacation.
2. Business English and travel: Can you guess where in the US should you go?
3. Business English Travel Expressions: Your quiz for today.

1. Business English Expressions: Why you need a vacation

First, let’s talk about WHY you need a vacation AND learn some great Business English expressions.

If you’re a business owner, freelancer or entrepreneur, you’ve got a lot on you mind–all the time. You’re making a lot of decisions, planning…thinking about your business.

Going on a vacation is a chance to recharge your batteries.
You’ve been working a LOT and if you don’t rest, you’ll run out of energy.

When you take time for yourself (and away from your work), you can unlock your creativity. That means you’ll get new ideas where you were stuck before.

Being in a new place can help you get perspective on your problems or your next steps. It helps you see things in a new way.

And?

It can even help your team and your business grow. In this case, we’re not talking about growing in size, but growing as in maturing–because people on your team will have out new responsibilities while you’re gone.

2. Business English and travel: Can you guess where in the US should you go?

So, where should you go on your trip? I have 3 ideas for you and I’m going to present them in a quiz format.  See if you can guess the answers from my clues. (And if you’d like some pictures to help you guess these places, don’t forget to watch the video.)

Can you name this famous road/ road trip?

A LOT of people I know dream of taking a road trip–driving a long way in a car or motorcycle!
Does that sound like you?
Well, then you could always start in Chicago…and drive over 2400 miles to end up at the beach in Santa Monica, California. You’ll cross 8 states in the process.  I promise it will be a real change of scenery for you.

Did you guess where I’m suggesting you go on your trip?

Yep! That’s it.
Route 66.

Now, see if you can name this famous region…

You may also be really interested in visiting some wide-open spaces, where there are no houses or cities and there are incredible views.

Maybe you want to see the desert. Red-colored canyons and rock formations…

Maybe you’d love to do a little hiking, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking or even rafting. You’ll have your pick of trails, mountains, and a big, big river…or one of the largest man-made lakes in the US.

So, what region are we touring?

You guessed it, we’re talking about the Western states.

Think Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Nevada…
There are some great National Parks to visit like: Monument Valley, Grand Canyon National Park, Zion National Park, Arches National Park, and Bryce Canyon.

Here’s one last question: Can you guess this famous city?
Alright, here’s another fun US destination for you to guess.  One good thing is that it’s on the East Coast–so the side with the Atlantic Ocean.

It’s a very big city. You won’t want to drive here! Instead, take the subway and go anywhere you want.

You can visit incredible museums, or go to a live show, play or musical…

There is a lot of nightlife here–and sometimes we call this “The city that never sleeps.” or “The Big Apple.”

Have you guessed it yet?

What if I told you that you could visit the Statue of Liberty here?

Aha!

That’s right, it’s New York City…

Now it’s time to see if you remember some of the great expressions you just heard.

Here’s your quiz for the week:
Find the missing word in each expression.

You’ve got a lot on your ____________. You’re making a lot of decisions, planning…thinking about your business.

Going on a vacation is a chance to recharge your _____________–or take a break so you can get your energy back.

It’s important to take time for _____________ (and away from your work),

Vacations help you _________________your creativity and get new ideas where you were stuck before.
