Une question comme “What are your thoughts on the presidential election?” passe mieux.
autre sujet.
Reste neutre, avec des questions comme “Maybe you can explain the elections to me, from an
American point of view” ou bien “Are you following the elections? Who do you think is going to
win?” et peu importe la réponse…
- “Listen, sorry to have to go, but I’ve got to get to a meeting in a few minutes.”
- “Right, so anyway, last weekend, I saw a movie you might like. It’s starring Leonardo DiCaprio and it’s about (blah blah blah…)
- “Well, I suppose we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one. So, what are your plans for the weekend?”
Now what about you?
What do you think of the American election this year?
But careful!
Have a fantastic week in English,
Christina
I think (yes I think ! Surprise ?) that YOU are stupid !
UNSUSCRIBED !
I’m sorry that you feel that way, Nymus, but if SBFG TV is not for you, I hope that you find resources that you enjoy better. Best of luck to you.
Your comment is quite stupid!
Thanks Emma 😉
Christina
let agree to disagree … we cannot be politically correct when speaking about Trump … just joking … or not ! 🙂
cheers
Marc
PS: I am sure Arnaud is joking …
Hi Marc! Glad to see you here! I agree, it’s hard to be politically correct when talking about Trump, but it can be interesting to listen to other people who actually do support him. Of course, you don’t have to understand or agree, but the arguments are, ahem, interesting to hear…
And in that case, it’s best to end the conversation, as you said, with “Let’s agree to disagree”!
Thanks and have a great week!
Hi Christina! I agree with you : I live in South Georgia and I avoid politic subject ! In the other hand, how could you explain that lot of Americam people used to show the name of their favorite candidate everywhere? I saw someone with a Trump badge at the supermarket, a license plate with “Trump, make America great again” and several signs in my neighborhood yard,…
Hi Emma! You’re not terribly far from where I’m from: South Mississippi! I think that people show their favorite candidate everywhere (including signs in the front yard. Have you seen those yet?) They’re proud to support their candidate and if they’re wearing a badge or openly showing it, they probably have very strong feelings.
What I would do is this: If they have a badge, sticker, etc. and it’s a candidate that interests you, feel free to start a conversation about that candidate, but don’t try to start a big debate. Keep the conversation friendly. If they have a badge of a candidate that you don’t like, just avoid the subject if you can, or if they start a conversation on politics, listen and use some of the expressions from the video like “I see”, etc. so the discussion doesn’t become to “violent”. That’s what I would do, in any case.
Best of luck to you 😉
Hello Christina. Thank’s for your advices. When i call to my daughter who lives in USA, she said to me that many people around are not interested by the american elections. She thought american people are out of humor and angry by politic, they want a great change, a different politic and Trump is maybe a solution. I think he is a great challenging, a great provocative, but probably a clever man. Don’t worry about it, if it was elected, he will be control by his collegues. Best regards.
Hi Freddy! Yes, I think your daughter is right that Americans are also fed up with (en ont marre de) politicians that are always the same: promising lots of things and then not taking action on the promises. So compared to traditional politicians, Trump is definitely something different.
I think that could be part of why people follow him. Like you said, he will be a problem, he likes provoking people to get attention, but he’s very clever. He knows how to exploit worries and fears and make people feel like he will eliminate those fears and “problems”.
I read a very good article (that I can’t manage to find again, argh!) that explains why it is not surprising that he is so popular. It made it easy to understand how and why he has managed to have so many fans, due to the social situation in the US.
I hope your daughter is doing ok with everything in her life in the US!
Thank you for sharing Christina! Very helpful for me as a French living in the US. Crazy time, isn’t it?
Working today on my next post about guns in the US (and after publishing yesterday the French version of it), I will gladly link it back to this post.
Hi Catherine,
Thanks so much, I’m glad that it’s helpful for you. Where do you live in the US? And I just bookmarked your article about the perception of “working hard” for French people vs Americans! I found it on LinkedIn actually. And I can imagine that living in Washington DC it must be really crazy at the moment!
Also, I just wanted to say that I love the articles on your blog! They’re very, very good and the subjects are really interesting too! Maybe I could make a video of one of them, and link back to the original article and mention you and your site directly in the video. Would you be interested in talking about it?
Hi Christina
I listened this radio emission on France Culture “Donald Trump’ la voix de l’Amérique profonde ?”
Here is the link :

I recommand to listen the podcast to you.
Have a great day
Hi Fabienne,
Wow, thanks! This looks like it will be very interesting! I’ll listen to it this evening during my walk! Then I’ll come back and let you know what I thought of what they say. Thanks a lot for sharing this with me and the SBFG Community!
Appreciate this post. Wiill try it out.
Hi Christina. Thank you for this video. Do you mind if I share it on the website I have created for my French students. Thanks!
Hi Laura ! I would be honored if you shared it. Please do!
And next week, the video will explain how the American elections work. It will be in French (with key words explained in English, to help people learn the vocabulary). The election system is very complex (even for Americans!), so I thought it would be easier if I explain it in French 🙂
