Last week we started watching a great video together by one of my favorite authors on habits and motivation, James Clear. If you missed it, you can check out the blog post and video here.

Remember what he said about habits?

“If you can change your habits, you can change your life.”

Watching videos in English can be a great way to improve your comprehension and learn new and advanced English expressions.  But it’s not always easy to do alone!

Having just a little help can make a big difference in what you understand and learn when you watch real-life videos in English.

So today we’ll continue on with two more big ideas from this video by James Clear.

And I’ll explain the expressions there so you can start making them a part of the English you understand…and can use in real life!

Did you know that I’ve made a worksheet to go with this lesson so that you can practice everything you see here today? I want you to make this part of the English you actually use in real life!

1. Big Idea #1: Change your environment to change your habits

2. Big Idea #2: Focus on starting, not finishing.

1. Big Idea #1: Change your environment to change your habits

Did you ever notice that your environment can affect your habits?

I’m sure you know what it’s like. If you are trying to eat healthy food…and someone brings you your favorite dessert and leaves it in your kitchen, it makes it hard to change.

But as James Clear points out in his video,

“You don’t have to be the victim of your environment, you can also be the architect of it.
In other words, you can decide not to be passive if your environment isn’t helping you.”

In other words, you can change your environment and design it in a way that helps you.

And you can do that with your habits in mind.

“You can decide to design something to make your good behaviors easier, your bad behaviors harder…”

Big Idea #2: Focus on starting, not finishing.

As a neurolanguage coach, I love this next piece of advice.

Because I know how much it can help my clients–people like you who have a goal that is going to take consistent practice over a period of time.

It’s something you can absolutely do if you focus on this great piece of advice from James Clear:

“You should optimize for the starting line, not the finish line.”

In other words, put your effort into getting started on your new habit.

Do the best you can at starting.

That’s the best way to reach your goals.
